Over-Reach Injuries

Over-reach injuries occur when the horse steps on its front heel with its hind leg. These injuries usually affect the bulb of the pastern and the horse can present with anything from mild to acute lameness, depending on the extent of damage and if there is any damage to the tissue.

Treating Over-Reach Injuries

  • Before commencing treatment you will need to assess the extent of the injury, in particular assessing how deep the wound is.
  • If there is bleeding you will firstly need to stop this.  Apply light pressure with your hand, or a pressure bandage for a minimum of 10 minutes.
  • When the bleeding has stopped you will need to clean the area.  If possible use a hose with clean, fresh water gently removing any mud or dirt from the area.
  • Once the area is clean, gently wash the wound with an antiseptic lotion and dry the wound.
  • If the injury is acute you will need to dress the wound using gauze tissue or wadding and a support bandage.
  • Depending on the size and extent of the injury you may need to consult a veterinarian for expert assessment and advice.

To assist prevention of injuries Over-Reach or Shield boots can be used.
